Opera House; An Art Performing Center
Opera House Sydney is one of the most famous building
of the 20th century which was designed by Jorn Utzon,
the man who won the. 1957 international design competition.
It is a performing art center with a number of halls whose
construction started in 1959 and ended in 1973 with a cost of $ 102 million
AUD.
Annually, more than 8 million people visits Opera House; on
the other hand, 1500 performances takes place in a year in different halls with
different capacity.

Concert Hall is the
biggest hall with 2,679 seat where concerts are held.

Joan Sutherland
Theater has 1,507 seat where Australian ballet is shown.

Drama Theater has
544 seat where dance and theatrical performances takes place.

Play House has 398
seat where end-stage Theater is shown.
5.
Studio has 280
seats.
6.
Utzon Room has the
capacity of hundreds of persons which is used for parties and other gatherings.
7.
Recording Room has
the capacity of several persons and it is used for recording purposes.
8.
Outdoor Forecourt
has the capacity of hundreds of people which is used for community functions
and gatherings.
Opera House was inaugurated in 1973 by the Queen
Elizabeth II and a great ceremony was organized for the opening along the
fireworks and a massive crowd participated in the ceremony.
This great building received many awards for the design and
work which are listed below:

Ø Meritorious Lighting Award, 1974.
Ø RAIA Civic Design Award, 1980.
Ø RAIA Commemorative Award, 1992.
